What counts as a caused turnover

A caused turnover goes to the defensive player whose action takes possession away from the other team. A stick check that knocks the ball loose, a body check that forces a drop, or pressure that makes a ball carrier step out of bounds all count, as long as possession changes because of the play: your team ends up with the ball, or the other team loses it for good. A check that knocks the ball loose is not a caused turnover if the attacker's own teammate scoops it back. A ball thrown away with nobody near the carrier is a turnover only.

Caused turnover and turnover are a pair: one team's caused turnover is the other team's turnover. In girls lacrosse a defender who picks off a pass gets an interception, which is its own stat, rather than a caused turnover. In boys lacrosse there is no interception stat, and a picked-off pass is recorded as a caused turnover.

How SquadProfile records it

Tap the defender, then tap Caused Turnover. If the loose ball is then scooped, record the ground ball for the player who scoops it, which may be a different player. The checker gets the caused turnover and the scooper gets the ground ball. When you track the opponent too, your defender's caused turnover and their attacker's turnover describe the same play.

Common mistakes

  • Crediting the scooper with the caused turnover. The stat belongs to the player who forced the mistake, not the one who picked up the result.
  • Recording a caused turnover on an unforced error. A pass into the dirt with no defender involved is a turnover only.
  • Recording a caused turnover when the other team keeps the ball. A knocked-loose ball they recover is a good play, not a stat.
  • Recording a caused turnover on an interception in girls lacrosse. The pick is an interception; the caused turnover column is for checks and forced errors.

Where it shows up

Caused turnovers appear as the CT column on season leaderboards and on the public box score for each game. Read them next to ground balls for the clearest public picture of a defender's season.
