What counts as a blocked shot

A blocked shot is a shot that a field player stops with their stick or body before it reaches the goalie. The defender gets the block. The shooter still took a shot, but not a shot on goal, because the ball never got to the cage. A shot that deflects off a defender and still reaches the goalie is not a block: it ends as a save or a goal like any other shot on goal.

Coaches track blocks as a defensive performance stat. A high count says the defense is getting into shooting lanes and taking shots away before the goalie has to make a play, which is the kind of effort a box score otherwise hides.

How SquadProfile records it

SquadProfile does not track blocked shots yet. On a blocked shot today, the blocker gets no stat, and the scoop that follows is a ground ball like any other loose ball. If you track the opposing team, record the shooter's attempt as a missed shot. Coaches who want the block count keep it in their own notes for now, and this entry will change if the app adds the stat.

Common mistakes

  • Counting a block as a save. Saves belong to the goalie, and a block happens before the ball gets there.
  • Counting a deflection that still reaches the goalie as a block. If the goalie had to play it, it was a shot on goal.
  • Counting a shot that misses on its own as blocked. The defender has to make contact with the ball.

Where it shows up

Nowhere on SquadProfile yet: no leaderboard column, box score line, or season total carries blocks. The stats that do describe the play today are the shooter's missed shot and the ground ball on the scoop.

Related stats

  • Save: the goalie's stop on a shot that reached the cage.
  • Shot on goal: what a blocked shot is not.
  • Ground ball: the scoop that often follows a block.
