What counts as a save

A save is a goalie stopping a shot that would have gone in. The shot has to be on goal: headed inside the pipes and under the crossbar. A shot that sails wide or rings off the pipe is a missed shot, not a save, even if the goalie touched it on the way by. A shot a field player blocks before it reaches the goalie is not a save either; that is a blocked shot, a defensive stat of its own. A shot the goalie stops and then loses into the net is a goal, not a save.

Every shot on goal ends one of two ways, a save or a goal against. That pairing is what makes save percentage work: saves divided by shots on goal faced, which is saves plus goals against.

How SquadProfile records it

When the other team shoots on goal and your goalie stops it, tap the goalie, then tap Save. When the shot goes in, tap the goalie, then tap Goal Against. If you track the opposing team, recording their goal records the goal against for your goalie at the same time, so you record the goal once. The app keeps both counts and works out save percentage from them, so you never enter a percentage by hand.

Common mistakes

  • Counting a pipe or a wide shot as a save. If it was not on goal, it is not a save.
  • Skipping the goal against. A goalie's save percentage is only right when every goal that gets past them is recorded against them.
  • Crediting a save to a field player who blocks a shot. That is a blocked shot, and saves belong to the goalie only.

Where it shows up

Saves appear on the Goalies tab of every season leaderboard as SV, next to goals against (GA) and save percentage (SV%). The public box score lists saves and goals against as counts, and the percentages live on the leaderboard and in the app's season analytics.
