What counts as a ride

A ride is the offense's attempt to stop the other team from clearing the ball after your team loses possession in the offensive end. Attackers and midfielders pressure the defenders and goalie as they try to move the ball up the field. It is a team stat with a result. A successful ride forces a turnover before the other team gets the ball across the midline with possession. A failed ride is a clear that succeeded.

A ride and a clear are the same play seen from the two sides: your ride is their clear. A team that rides well gets extra possessions in its own offensive end, which is why coaches drill it even though it rarely shows up on a box score.

How SquadProfile records it

Tap Ride, then Successful or Failed. There is no player to pick, because the ride belongs to the team. If the ride succeeds because a player caused the turnover, record the caused turnover for that player as well; the ride result credits the team and the caused turnover credits the player. The app records only your side: a failed ride is not recorded as the opponent's successful clear, so if you track the opponent, record their clear result yourself. The app keeps ride attempts, successes, and the percentage in the team's stats.

Common mistakes

  • Recording a ride only when it works. Every time the other team tries to clear against you, that is a ride attempt, successful or failed.
  • Recording a successful ride without the caused turnover. The team result and the player credit are separate stats.
  • Confusing ride and clear. If your team has the ball and is moving it up the field, that is your clear, not your ride.

Where it shows up

Rides do not have a column on the public leaderboards or box scores. They appear in the app, in the team's game and season stats, as attempts, successes, and a riding percentage.

Related stats

  • Clear: the same play from the other team's side.
  • Caused turnover: the player credit when a ride succeeds.
  • Ground ball: the scoop that often ends a successful ride.
